General Questions:

How long will it take you to write my song?

The general turn around time is about 1 month. Some songs happen much sooner, some take a little longer, depending on things like how well the information turns into lyrics, how long it takes you to get back to me with approval on lyrics and melody line, and how many different tracks are being recorded. It is possible to write and record a song within a day, however quality art takes time.

Do I get to hear it before it’s recorded?

Yes, you will get to approve the lyrics and the melody line. I will send a sample track to make sure you like everything before I go into the recording studio.

What if I hate the end result?

My goal is to make you happy. I will work with you until you have a song that you like and will be the perfect sound track for you.
If for some reason we both agree that we cannot make that happen, I offer a 100% refund.

Will my song end up on the radio or played for other people?

Not without your explicit permission. Ever. With some songs, if you give your permission in advance, I may put them up on my website as examples of my work, or I may find a commercial application for a song, but I would NEVER use it without your permission. If you don’t want your song made public, it won’t be.

Is my information private?

Yes, all of it. I don’t sell email lists, nor do I discuss people’s song information with anyone else. Many times this information can be private, painful and intimate. It doesn’t go any further than my notebook. This is your story. The only reason it should be shared is if you want it to be and do it yourself. Again, if you choose to allow me, I may post your song, along with a very brief description of why it was written, on my website.

Is everything you do original?

For these purposes, yes. As a performer, I do play traditional Celtic music. However everything I write for you will be 100% original. No plagiarism, no sampling. Just great music.

Do you ever use other people’s tunes?

Only if you really want me to. If you happen to have a great melody line in your head, then let me know. My job is to write great songs. I’m not really a song satirist. I don’t usually use a known melody line (say, “Singin’ in the Rain” ) and then just re-write the words unless it is specifically requested that I do so.

Who owns the song rights?

I do. It is impractical for me to do otherwise. What that means for you is that you cannot use this song in a commercial, nor can you send it to a radio station and expect to get huge royalty payments if it goes platinum. If either of those things happen, I will end up getting the money for it. You are free to send your song to as many people as you would like, to play it as often as you want at any private event of your choosing. If you play it publicly (i.e., if you ask your local DJ to play it every time you go to a club) again, there will be royalty issues that your DJ will have to deal with. I am happy to discuss this in detail if you wish to know. If you are looking for commercial music, please click here for more information.

Creation and Pricing Questions:

What does “an edit” mean?

Every time I send something to you for your approval, that counts as an “edit”. It is part of the approval process. I want you to be happy with the product you are ultimately receiving. So an “edit” is when I send you the lyrics, and you send them back with 3 out of the 4 verses scratched out. I will then go back and re-write the song and re-submit it to you. If it comes back to me with one or two words needing to be changed, I don’t consider that another “edit”. However if we go through the above process 3 times, that’s when I may have to charge for more editing time. Similar rules apply to melody line and the mixing process.

Can I add more tracks without changing my package?

Yes, additional tracks are $50.00. So if you wanted a song with 2 vocal tracks and 3 instruments, I would just add $50.00 on to the $400.00 cost of package B.

Can I get a CD, or an extra CD?

Yes, depending on your package, a CD may already be included. (Packages B, C, and D) Additional CDs are $20.00

Can I get my music framed without purchasing the most expensive package?

Yes, framing is $150.00 additional on every package except Package D (where it is included.)

Can I get sheet music of my song made up?

Yes. If it is not already included in your package, (Packages C and D) it will cost an extra $50.00

What if I need my song right away?

A rush fee of $200.00 will apply to any orders that need to be completed within a time frame of less than 1 month. If your song happens to take less than one month, but your scheduled time frame was 1 month or more, you will not be charged extra.
